A new report from South Korea’s unification ministry reveals that North Korea executed a 22-year-old man in 2022 for watching and sharing South Korean films and music, as part of a crackdown on cultural imports.

 

The 2024 Report on North Korean Human Rights, based on testimonies from 649 defectors, highlights Pyongyang’s efforts to control the flow of outside information, especially targeting youth.

 

The North Korean law adopted in 2020 bans “reactionary ideology and culture,” leading to punishments for actions perceived as influenced by South Korean customs, such as wearing white wedding dresses or using certain slang.

 

Mobile phones are frequently inspected for South Korean influences. Despite these harsh measures, South Korean culture continues to spread within North Korea, posing a threat to the regime’s ideology.

 

The influence persists even with closed borders due to Covid-19, as information is still distributed through informal networks. Recent defector testimonies reveal hidden resentment against the regime and a strong desire for change among North Korean youth.
